Tips for green living #1: insulate your home
It’s no secret that the UK has some of the worst housing stock in Europe. We lose a considerable amount of heat through our poorly-insulate homes – and considering that 27% of the UK’s emissions arise from domestic energy use, insulating homes can go a long way towards reducing our environmental impact.
Roughly half of domestic energy use is spent on space heating. In Zero Carbon Britain 2030, we suggested that the average home’s heating and lighting usage could be reduced by around 80%. If the rest of that demand was met by renewables – well, we’d have a pretty sound picture, environmentally.
So, what are the options? You could consider roof and loft insulation, cavity or solid wall insulation, draught-proofing and window-glazing. We suggest some approaches in our new release, the Home Energy Handbook.
This summer we’re running a six-week festival all about building a brighter future. We’ll be running guided tours, talks and workshops – as well as two special one-day events – to get you inspired about making a difference.
